2. Skopje
Stay
About the destination: Skopje is the capital and largest city in the Republic of Macedonia, as well as its political, cultural, economic and academic centre. Skopje is a new city, though one exhibiting architectural creativity. A major trade centre during the Roman and Ottoman Empires, the city was almost completely destroyed by a 1963 earthquake. There are reminders of Skopje’s past which, together with its contemporary wonders, deserve a look. Skopje is located on the upper course of the Vardar River and is a major north-south Balkan route between Central Europe and Athens. Overlooking the city is a large fortress that dominates the skyline over the Old Town. The Kale Fortress is on the highest point of the city and overlooks the river Vardar. After the earthquake of 1963, only a few restored walls, the main gateway and two towers remained. The present-day ruins date back from the 10th century enlargement of the fort under Tsar Samoil. One of the most famous landmarks in Skopje is the Kameni Most, or Stone Bridge. It straddles the river in the middle of town close by the city’s central square,Macedonia Square, and is something of a city icon, being featured on the town crest. The Old Bazaar or Carsija is a very interesting part of the city and is its oldest part. The Carsija is separated from the city by The Stone Bridge. During the daytime, it is a hustling community of craftsmen creating leather, copper and clothes, restaurants, café and bars, and interesting cultural sites, including churches, mosques and museums. In the evenings, the bars and restaurants are busy with customers and live music is played. There is a large concentration of cafes along the river from Macedonia Square, which seem to be full of almost unbelievably fashionable people eating and drinking. Affordable and refreshingly accommodating, Skopje is a city of many cultures and is well worth a visit.

About the destination: Title: Discover Prizren: Kosovo's Hidden Gem Nestled in the heart of the Balkans, Prizren stands as a testament to Kosovo's rich cultural tapestry and enduring history. This picturesque city, with its cobbled streets and Ottoman-era architecture, is a treasure trove for travelers seeking a blend of authentic charm and historical depth. Prizren, straddling the banks of the Bistrica River and overshadowed by the imposing view of the Shar Mountains, is a scene straight out of a fairy tale. Begin your journey in the Old Town, where the past lives in harmony with the present. Stroll through the narrow lanes lined with traditional stone houses, and soak up the vibrant atmosphere of the Shadervan Square—a bustling plaza filled with cafes, fountains, and the gentle murmur of daily life. Don't miss the Sinan Pasha Mosque, an architectural masterpiece from the 17th century, which stands as a symbol of the city's Islamic heritage. As you wander, you'll find the city's history etched in every corner, from Byzantine churches to Ottoman bridges. One of Prizren's most iconic landmarks is the medieval fortress perched high above the city. A hike up to the fortress at sunset offers an unforgettable panorama, with the city's rooftops and minarets set against the backdrop of rolling hills and the fading light. Back in the heart of the city, delve into Prizren's cultural scene by exploring its numerous art galleries and workshops, or time your visit with the Dokufest—an internationally acclaimed documentary and short film festival that transforms the city into a vibrant hub of creativity each summer. When it comes to cuisine, Prizren will delight your taste buds with its fusion of Albanian, Turkish, and Balkan flavors. Sample local specialties such as flija—a layered pancake-like dish cooked over an open flame—or enjoy a traditional Turkish coffee in one of the many quaint coffee houses that dot the cityscape. As night falls, the city takes on a new life. The sound of the call to prayer mixes with the chatter of locals and travelers alike, making Prizren not just a destination, but a sensory experience that stays with you long after you've left. Whether you're a history buff, a cultural enthusiast, or simply in search of beauty, Prizren is a destination that should not be missed on any journey through the Balkans.

About the destination: "Sarajevo is the capital and largest city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with an estimated population of 369,534. The Sarajevo metropolitan area, including Sarajevo, East Sarajevo and surrounding municipalities inhabitants. Moreover, it is also the capita of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina entity, the capital of the Republika Srpska entity, and the center of the Sarajevo Canton. Sarajevo is the leading political, social and cultural center of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a prominent center of culture in the Balkans, with its region-wide influence in entertainment, media, fashion, and the arts. MAIN TOURIST ATTRACTIONS • Old Town. The cobbled streets, mosques and Oriental style shops at the heart the city are a world away from Europe, and when the call-to-prayer starts, one could be forgiven for thinking that they were actually in the Middle East. • Latin Bridge. Across the street from this bridge was the location of the 28 June 1914 assassination of Archduke of the Austrian Hungarian empire Franz Ferdinand, the event that sparked the beginning of World War I. A memorial to the assassin Gavrilo Princip, his footprints carved in stone and mounted in the sidewalk, used to be here but this was removed during the 1992-1995 War. • Yellow Fortress. The small fortress provides a great view of the city. Walk through the war cemetery at the eastern end of the old town. Another way is to follow the river upstream. • Markale Market Place. Marked the start of NATO intervention and thereby end of the war after a bombing which took the life of some 40 people. The main entrance is located on Ferhadija and backs onto Mula Mustafe Baseskije. The street that runs between the two roads is called Gajevo. • Vrelo Bosne. The beginning of the river Bosna where the water is pure and ice cold. In less than 20 minutes on foot from the city centre, you are out in the countryside, with no suburbs in between: unique for a large city. • Bosnian Historical Museum. The moving display on the siege of Sarajevo is a must-see - if you are able to cope with the pictures of the maimed citizens after shelling of markets. And you will be heartbroken by the pictures drawn by children. • National Museum. Static displays of the natural and human history of Bosnia and Herzegovina - including an exhibition of traditional Turkish style homes of Sarajevo prevalent in the nineteenth century, an extensive collection of insects and stuffed mammals and a large geology section with samples from around the world and a number of meteorites."
